Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) Group Therapy

Approximately twice a year Evolve In Nature offers group therapy for adults who grew up in households with alcoholism or other substance abuse/addiction. This group is open to all adults who are interested in healing from the patterns of behavior perpetuated in an alcoholic family system. The intention of this group is to identify family roles and patterns of behavior that occur in an alcoholic family, to identify your needs that went unaddressed, to understand how your current patterns of behavior in relationships might be rooted in your alcoholic family system, how to shift/heal those patterns in order to foster healthy relationships in adulthood and in your own parenting (if applicable), and how to heal from the grief and/or anger experienced with your parent(s).

Please note: this is not a group for adults who are actively abusing substances.

If you are wondering if you are an adult child of an alcoholic family system or if this group would apply to you check out this page on our website and consider the following common characteristic(s) of an adult child of alcoholism/dysfunction by Janet G. Woititz:

  1. Adult children of alcoholics guess at what normal behavior is.

  2. Adult children of alcoholics have difficulty following a project through from beginning to end.

  3. Adult children of alcoholics lie when it would be just as easy to tell the truth.

  4. Adult children of alcoholics judge themselves without mercy.

  5. Adult children of alcoholics have difficulty having fun.

  6. Adult children of alcoholics take themselves very seriously.

  7. Adult children of alcoholics have difficulty with intimate relationships.

  8. Adult children of alcoholics overreact to changes over which they have no control.

  9. Adult children of alcoholics constantly seek approval and affirmation.

  10. Adult children of alcoholics usually feel that they are different from other people.

  11. Adult children of alcoholics are super responsible or super irresponsible.

  12. Adult children of alcoholics are extremely loyal, even in the face of evidence that the loyalty is undeserved.

  13. Adult children of alcoholics are impulsive. They tend to lock themselves into a course of action without giving serious consideration to alternative behaviors or possible consequences. This impulsively leads to confusion, self-loathing, and loss of control over their environment. In addition, they spend an excessive amount of energy cleaning up the mess.

If any of these characteristics apply to you or to someone you love, please reach out for individual or group therapy. Several of our therapists at Evolve In Nature are highly trained in therapy for adults who grew up in alcoholic, narcissistic, and/or dysfunctional households. Level I Group

November 9, 2023, 14 weeks, every other Thursday, 6:00 - 7:30 pm MST, in-person.
Limited to 8 participants, closed group. Group Fee $775.

At Evolve In Nature, we offer group therapy for folks who grew up with parents or caregivers with problematic alcohol or substance use, regardless of how well-functioning or non-functioning they were under the influence. This group is for you if you are an adult looking to heal from the effects of substance use in your family system. In addition to substance use, your family system may have included mental health issues or narcissistic patterns. Perhaps you notice that your behavior toward your partner, friends, or children resembles your parent's behaviors, even if you do not use or misuse substances. This group will be educational; it will help you understand roles in families and how a parent's substance use affected your development and sense of self in the past and present. This group will support you to acknowledge both what happened and what didn't happen in your family system, and it will provide you with tools and skills for healing now.
